Teaching new skills in food and craft production in the Amazon Rainforest

Reduce hunger and poverty, and improve livelihoods

Protect and restore forests and ecosystems

South and Central America

The issue:

Amazonian Indigenous people in Brazil are socioeconomically underserved and disadvantaged. As the Amazon Rainforest faces deforestation, so too do indigenous people face poverty resulting from a lack of access to education. and economic opportunities.

Many tribes have shifted away from subsistence-based farming and hunting and to cash-based economies. Yet, without adequate training and support for this shift, these indigenous people are left with lower incomes and reduced resources.

The project:

Instituto Amazonas is a non-profit organisation with a mission to develop income generation projects by providing face-to-face and online training to communities living in the Amazon. By strengthening these groups, Instituto Amazonas can promote social inclusion, empowerment and sustainability in the region, contributing to the preservation of culture, natural resources and the construction of a fairer and more equitable future.

Croda Foundation is excited to fund another project for Instituto Amazonas. Our grant of £76,000 will help Indigenous communities become self-sustaining and more resilient by teaching them new skills and knowledge in food and craft production to improve their livelihoods. The organisation will guide these communities in identifying marketing opportunities for their products, enabling them to improve their incomes.

Throughout the implementation of the project, 3,212 indigenous people will directly benefit, and 6,000 native trees will be planted in degraded areas to counteract deforestation.
